School starts!

School is starting here, tomorrow! I am not prepared. Don’t get me wrong, I have all of the boy’s school supplies, all safely delivered to their classrooms last week, their lunch boxes/snacks, I have even packed up Matthew’s lunchtime supplements for the week, ready to be delivered to the health assistant for this weeks distribution. But I’M not ready. Each year is a big step forward and this year is particularly scary for me. Larry and I had hoped to have Matthew fully recovered by first grade. It was our goalpost. It was just far enough away that we thought we had enough time, but it was still so early on in his school life that we wouldn’t have to worry about the “autism” label or anything.

But here it is, the day before first grade and he still carries an IEP and an educational autism dx. I could dwell on that and let it bring me down, just like hurricane Irene has brought down power lines all around our city, leaving people in the dark, feeling powerless and afraid. Instead, I choose to look at how far our little boy has come. He is already reading at a mid-first grade level, has interest in swimming and wants to take skating lessons, wants to learn to cook, loves eating out, wants to do play dates with his favorite friends, loves his brothers, and is just plain funny!

God did a really great thing giving us this family. We, as their parents, must teach them to navigate this world and be good people, but they are teaching us about really living and being loved. It seems ao simple, but I know so many people that can’t love themselves, and therefore never really live life. They pursue all sorts of “things”, thinking happiness comes in a box, car or cash award. Thinking if I’m only better than her, richer than him, thinner than them, then I’ll be happy. But really missing the point of loving one’s self, and loving your family and friends.

I think God has spent years, yes years – I’m sort of a slow learner on this one, trying to teach me patience and love, but her has put certain obstacles in my way which have forced my hand. The only way I will survive is to accept what has been given to me, to love myself for who and what I am, and then to work my butt off!

Orangeade

Recently we went on vacation to The outer banks of North Carolina. Because I’m a huge geek I made the family visit Roanoke Island, the site of the first settlement in the states. Also the site of The Lost Colony, where all the settlers disappeared without a trace. I kind of dig the scary, supernatural element to that disappearance, but in all actuality the settlers were probably absorbed into a local Indian tribe when they couldn’t take care of themselves. But I digress. While on Roanoke Island we stopped at Big Al’s Diner where our middlest child ordered an orangeade to drink. Oh, so yummy. It was so good he has asked to drive back just to get another.

I also enjoyed the little sip he allowed me, so I decided to make my own here at home. Normally I’d make it with raw sugar, but since I’m both trying to lose some weight and cut back on yeast producing foods, I decided to use stevia instead. Plus this way I can make one glass at a time.

Ingredients
Mineral water, unflavored like San Pellegrino
Orange juice
Stevia
Ice

Take a large glass and add ice. Pour about orange juice about 1/4 way up glass. Fill rest of glass with mineral water. Add stevia to taste. I like the liquid stevia as it mixes easily. Drink and enjoy.

Oh, you could also blend this mixture in your Magic Bullet and make a frosty orangeade if you like.

Stay Well.

Time Island Review

Time Island Review

My kids and I were given a chance to be part of the Beta testing for a new Internet game called Time Island. To make the game even more exciting they sent us a gift box full of Time Island stickers, bracelets, tattoos, a bandana, pair of sunglasses and a Time Island bag. The kids love the stickers and made sure I put them on their new school supplies.

When starting out on Time Island you get to create your own avatar, which was both fun for me and the boys. They liked deciding what they would look like on the island. You also get to choose which island you want to play on, and as a parent you can set some safety control which allow you to decide the level of interaction your child can have with other players. This game strives to have your child build an on-line community of friends, but in a safe and friendly manner. Therefore they have moderators that “walk” the island, their avatars are dressed so as to be easily recognized. You can talk to the moderators and ask for help with the game or report any negative encounters with other Time Island participants. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated!

Once on the island your child will need to make friends, collect fire wood and food, keep their hut clean and take care of themselves by bathing, brushing their teeth and eating. It reminds me a bit of virtual pets, except it is your child, not a pet. The Island is interspersed with various games, most of an educational nature such as pattern matching or math equations. My boys enjoyed playing those games.

The only negative I could really find is the fact that the game will require a lot of time and you may need to limit play time so that your child isn’t absorbed by the island! Hopefully your kids will enjoy it as much as mine.

Stay Well!

Glutenfreely.com

I don’t know if you have found this website or not, but glutenfreely.com has some great deals. Today I ordered quite a few boxes of Bisquick Gluten Free from them. It was on sale and if you spent $40, shipping was free! I love, love, love free shipping. So I grabbed 10 boxes of the Bisquick, some San-J Tamari, Tinkyada elbow macaroni, Glutino Pretzels and some crackers. They carry a lot of great products and seem to run sales on a regular basis. They even carry Udi products, which happen to make my son’s favorite GF bread.

So if you use any of these products you may wNt to check out GlutenFreely.com for their deals.
