I love to be artsy and craftsy, but I lack inspiration. I need someone that is willing to tell me what to make. Sort of like when I was in college and taking my art classes. I wasn’t a bad artist, but I always did better with an assignment rather than just a free form task. I’m sort of a non-creative creative person.

Anyway, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores has a great Cape Discovery section that promotes kid-friendly craft projects for the summer. At my location Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Store it was right up front so you couldn’t miss it. You can also go on-line and look at the crafts in the spring catalog to get some ideas. I decided to try the ombre dyed t-shirts because I really liked the look of them. Of course I couldn’t leave well enough alone, but decided to try mixing the ombre effect with a more traditional tie dye look. I think I came up with a pretty cute blend of the two.

Jo-Ann’s has a ton of great ideas for summer. I know my sister-in-law and her children would love them. They are super creative and crafty. I can’t wait to hear which craft you pick.

Please feel free to pin and repin my craft using the hashtag #summerofjoann. If my craft gets the most repins I have a chance to win $100 Jo-Ann gift card!.

Kiwi Crate Review

Disclosure: I received a Kiwi Crate to help facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

Kiwi Crate Making Music

It is funny, I consider myself a fairly creative person, but when it comes to coming up with ideas for things to do with my kids I’m a blank slate. I can’t seem to think up fun and interesting ideas to save my life, or their day. I’m B-O-R-I-N-G. That is where Kiwi Crate comes in. Kiwi Crates are boxes that are delivered right to your door, and they are filled with fun, creative themed ‘crafts’. The crate I had a chance to review was all about percussion instruments and it had two build-it-yourself crafts to keep the kids busy while introducing them to music making. First we got to make hand/foot bells. It was a great little craft that worked through a creative outlet. My youngest son, Lorenzo, helped me make them one day and I was amazed by how much he could do and understand. We needed to decorate our wooden beads which allowed him to show his artistic side (which he gets from me!), then we strung the beads and bells onto elastic band which was provided with our Kiwi Crate. Finally Lorenzo had a chance to make some noise! And he completely enjoyed making that melodic noise all through the house.

The second DIY craft in our Kiwi Crate was a homemade xylophone. Kiwi Crate provided us with all the materials, we simply had to put it together. I really liked this xylophone and while Lorenzo was playing the bells I accompanied him on the xylophone.

Kiwi Crate also included instructions on how to make 6 additional homemade instruments. Kiwi Crate offers several different plans, the one time crate, the 3 months of Kiwi Crates, the 6 months of Kiwi Crates and the full 12 months of Kiwi Crates. I think these would be a great gift for family that lives far away. Or for a parent or grandparent like me that is creatively challenged. It would also be fabulous for the upcoming summer months. Get one for each kid and let them have a bast each month this summer. Make sure you connect with Kiwi Crate on Facebook,  Twitter, and Pinterest.

DIY Glitter Sunglasses

DIY glitter sunglasses-1-3

I have a little bit of an obsession with glitter. It isn’t like I use it all the time, but I have this weird desire when I see it. I need to get my hands on it and own it. Sort of the same way I am about books and paint. It took me a long time to fall in love with the library because every time I wanted a book, I wanted to own it, not just borrow it. I’m over that now. But when I see glitter I have to possess it. So to help ease my obsession I decided to make some DIY Glitter Sunglasses.

How to Make DIY Glitter Sunglasses

The formula is simple. Find yourself some cheap sunglasses you like. I got mine at Target for about $8.00. Then get yourself some fun, sparkly glitter. I couldn’t resist this pack of twelve chunky glitters from Recollections. For this project I opted for the copper color on the tortoise shell glasses and Ebony on the black glasses. Lastly you need some Modge Podge and a small paint brush to apply the Modge Podge. I used Mod Podge Gloss
for this project. DO NOT use the Matte Modge Podge as it will dull the glitter.

DIY Glitter Sunglasses

Ingredients
  • sunglasses
  • Modge Podge gloss
  • paint brush
  • glitter
  • sanding block
Instructions
  1. Using the paint brush apply a light layer of the Modge Podge to the outside ear pieces of the sunglasses.
  2. While the Modge Podge is wet, sprinkle the glitter over the entire area.
  3. Allow to air dry.
  4. Once dry, apply another thin layer of the Modge Podge to the top of the glitter to seal it and keep the glitter from falling off.
  5. Allow to dry completely.
  6. Check the underside of the ear pieces for glitter and use the sanding block to sand it away so it does not irritate your ears.
