A Funny Story about My Dog

A funny story:

Years ago, before I was married with kids, I wanted to get a dog. I searched high and low for the perfect dog, since I’m allergic to some breeds. I settled on a non-shedding breed such as a poodle, Maltese or Bichon Frise. I didn’t really expect to find one of the more exotic breeds at the pound but I did think I could find a poodle. I started calling local shelters to see if they had an non-shedders. I finally called this one pound about 40 minutes away and asked if they had any small non-shedding dogs like a poodle or even a Bichon Frise. To my surprise the man said “Yes, we have a Bichon right now.” I rushed up there and found the cutest little guy I had ever seen. I told him I wanted the dog and they put the order in. They had to have the vet check him over and then they would release him to me early the next week.

I was really excited and asked my dad to go with me to pick him up. We wrapped him in a towel just in case he had fleas and took him directly to Pet Smart for grooming. I filled out the paperwork as best I could and told them I had just rescued him from the shelter. Then I went home and anxiously awaited their call telling me he was ready. The call came and my parents and I went over to pick him up. When they brought out this dog I was amazed. He was beautiful, fluffy and white. Just a little angel. We proudly put his leash on him and headed out the door on that cool October evening. Note that it was evening in October so it was getting pretty dark early. For someone to really get a good look at us they had to be pretty close.

Right as we walked in the door my phone began to ring. It was Pet Smart telling me the police were there because I was a dog-napper and I had to return the dog immediately. Apparently the dog’s owner had seen us leave with his dog, but instead of telling us it wasn’t our dog he went in and called the police on us. I was rightly confused but we complied and brought the dog back. There was a very angry man standing outside Pet Smart. He was mumbling things under his breath and cursing at us. When we went inside we found out that this man was the actual owner of the lovely little dog they had give us, name Daisy. She had mistakenly been given to us because we  told them our dog was a Bichon when we came to pick him up and they just grabbed the wrong dog as there were 2 Bichons there that day. The man was furious and ranting, wanting to know “Don’t you even know your own damn dog?” Well, actually sir, no I don’t know my own damn dog as I just rescued him from an animal shelter and brought him directly to the store to be groomed! But are you such a coward that you couldn’t even stop us and ask us why we had your dog when you saw us leaving on that very dark October evening? What did you think we were a professional dog-napping gang and my 70 year old father was packing heat?

When we finally got everything straightened out and they brought my scruffy little muffin out I couldn’t have been happier. Not only did I have a great story to tell, but I also had the sweetest dog in the world. My co-workers, having heard the story, posted Wanted posters around our building with my picture on them, announcing to all that I was a known dog-napper and that I may be packing!

Survival Kits

Recently our area has been hit with a lot of really serious storms, including tornadoes. We never had tornadoes when I was younger but something has changed and our area is being hit on a regular basis. Because they are sort of a new phenomena for us,  most people  in my area don’t really know how to prepare for one. I don’t want to be caught off guard if we have any sort of natural disaster and need to fend for ourselves for a few days, so I began gathering items for survival kits .

At first I focused on health, medical, andfirst aid items. You can find fantastic deals for health products online. I gathered general first aid such as hydrogen peroxide, band aids, latex gloves, gauze, pain relievers and medical masks. I also packaged up some rags, matches and trash bags. The next items I am focusing on will be functional things such as a utility knife or Leatherman, plastic sheeting, eating utensils, changes of clothes, blankets, shoes and coats. Then I want to gather enough water to last each person at least 3 days, shelf stable foods such as peanut butter and canned goods, a battery powered radio and enough batteries to last several days. You can purchase Meals Ready to Eat, tents and weather radios, and use coupon codes to get discounts online for many useful products. This is a huge undertaking and you want to buy quality stuff, but not break the bank while doing it.

I don’t want to be caught off guard should a storm or other disaster happen. I need to provide for my family, make sure we are safe and taken care of. I urge you to look into finding a safe area of your home and gathering your survival kits to ensure your family’s safety should disaster strike. Stay Well.

The Universe Knows Gift Guide Review

the universe knows hoodie

With school back in session I have already started thinking about Christmas. Mostly because being the parent of a special needs child means I have tons of people on my gift list. The classroom parents always remember the general teacher and her teaching assistant but they never remember the special educator that sits in the classroom with our special needs kids. And so I’m always on the lookout for interesting and useful gifts. I found out about the universe knows and instantly fell in love with some of their products.

My Gift Guide from the universe knows

Immediately I was drawn to the women’s  100% cotton V-neck hoodies.  They are very stylish and effortless looking. I picked out the really pretty fuschia pink with the inspirational “love without limits” stitched on the front. That quote really spoke to me, because being the parent of a child with anger issues can often put a damper on our relationship, and I like being gently reminded that only with loving my child without limits will he grow into all he can be. After I tried on the hoodie I liked it so much that I now want the cafe colored one “be in gratitude”. Really, these are beautiful and wearable, pieces of courage.

the universe knows, inc. is an apparel company dedicated to inspiring people. the company was founded on and is dedicated to a unique vision:

trust your wisdom. share your gift. stretch your boundary. the rewards will be most gratifying – this the universe knows.

the universe knows mug

I also received a 16 oz. bistro mug. This mug has the perfect heft and weight. I love the design with the wide rim, the simplicity of the design makes it a real stand out. I have a few mugs that I just love, and this is one of them. My baby pink mug (which is also dishwasher and microwave safe) carries the message “keep hope alive”, but there are other quotes that are just as special. Some of my favorites are “be the change”, “practice self love” (that is one I can always use to remember), “expect the best”, and “believe in yourself”. So many of these would be great reminders to new college students, teachers, therapists, coaches and retirees.

I think the perfect gift for Matthew’s teachers would be their leather inspiration journals. What teacher doesn’t love to write? Not only do the journals have the inspirational quote on the front, but they also carry a very special message on the first page. The pages are a creamy off-white with steel gray lines and the books carry an attached ribbon page marker. These are beautiful books that would be treasured gifts. I think they would make fantastic stocking stuffers.

I encourage you to stop by the universe knows and take a real look at their products. I think they are uplifting and strengthening, and I know I would love anything from their line. You can like them on Facebook to keep up with their latest trends. Stay Well.

I was provided with samples of their products in exchange for a truthful review.
