Sara, you have to pick them. They have hard, indelible shells so you must crack them similar to a lobster and eat the meat inside. They are actually blue before they are steamed at which point they turn red. The seasoning is called Old Bay and they are steamed in it. Then you get some on your fingers while you clean the crabs and you have Maryland steamed crabs. They are quite popular.

  3. Yum! Those look absolutely fantastic! I love steamed crabs! My college roommate was from Maryland and she got me hooked on them! 🙂

Thanks! I’m working on getting better. I did have an interesting subject!

  5. Are those soft shell? Do you have to break them open? Just so curious. I love crab but have never eaten them like that. Great photos, BTW 🙂

Those are hard shell, not soft. Soft are usually pan fried or deep fried. These are hard shell steamed. You have to open the shell and pick the meat sort of like lobster. A huge Maryland tradition.

  6. Yum! I love crab.

  7. I’m not much on seafood, but my kiddos would have LOVED this!

No, he is steamed. When alive they are blue. After steaming they turn red. The stuff on him is Old Bay seasoning. After steaming we have to clean them and then you eat. It is so good!

  13. Now I am hungry! Great for the 4th!
