EASe CD gave me their EASe Funhouse Treasure Hunt! computer game for Matthew (and Nico) to try out. The game has six rooms, each with a different personality and challenges. The gamer uses a mouse to control a toy tractor through the different rooms. The gamer’s goal is to travel through these rooms looking for the different treasures. The treasures range from word cards, to dot cards (quantity), to images of human faces (emotion cards), to colors, geometric shapes, fruit and more. The player must follow directions, concentrate, explore and use their memory skills, not to mention fine motor!

“EASe (Electronic Auditory Stimulation effect) video games are designed to stimulate, challenge, and promote sensory processing in children on the autism spectrum and others experiencing difficulty with auditory hypersensitivity, hyperacusis, central auditory processing disorder or sensory integration disorder.

EASe games are a great way for children on the autism spectrum to listen to EASe encoded music while enjoying a stimulating, fun and nonviolent treasure-hunt game.”

The game is recommended for Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7, 2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 64 MB video card and 400 MB available space. A computer savvy child could probably install the game, but it was necessary for me to do so on our machine. The install was very simple and the CD is needed to run the game.

The child gets to choose the color of their tractor and if the driver is a boy or a girl. Matthew and Nico have enjoyed playing the game, although it is a bit difficult for them, they are only 5 and 2.5. Since installing the game they have asked to play it several times, so I think they enjoy it and the fact that there are multiple levels, so the game does not just repeat.

These games are geared towards children with auditory processing disorders, and I love that they use embedded EASe encoded music during the game.

EASe has generously given me a second copy of EASe Funhouse Treasure Hunt and EASe Airshow (a jet aircraft flying game) to give to one Matthew’s Puzzle reader.

  3. Dr. Alfred Tomatis, a French otolaryngologist, is recognised as the modern day originator of sound or music therapy. In the early 1950's he developed an effective therapy method using altered music to treat conditions such as auditory processing disorder, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder and autism. Another French doctor, Dr. Guy Bérard, developed a similar method, Auditory Integration Training (AIT), which has found many followers in the USA. From personal experience I know that many clients report improvements in understanding, speech, balance, behaviour and emotional well-being after just two or three weeks of daily sound therapy.

Sensory Activation Solutions (SAS) is an organisation with Centres in the U.K. and Turkey that provides a unique service for children and adults that face learning or developmental difficulties. When the established educational, psychological or medical services fail to provide adequate support, the SAS methodology often can provide practical solutions that result in noticeable improvements in daily life.

You may be interested to check out their Free Sound Therapy Home Programme. Their Auditory Activation Method builds on the pioneering work of Dr. Tomatis and Dr. Bérard and has been specifically developed with the aim to improve sensory processing, interhemispheric integration and cognitive functioning. It has helped many children and adults with a wide range of difficulties, ranging from dyslexia and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder to sensory processing disorders and autism. It is not a cure or medical intervention, but a structured training programme that can help alleviate some of the debilitating effects that these conditions can have on speech and physical ability, daily behaviour, emotional well-being and educational or work performance.

There is no catch, it's absolutely free and most importantly often effective. Check it out at: http://www.sascentre.com/en_free.html.
