Bisquick Gluten Free Review

Matthew and I went to the store a few weeks ago and bought some of the Betty Crocker Gluten Free Brownie Mix. So far it has been the best tasting GFCF brownie mix I have been able to find. (I also like the Bob’s Red Mill brownie mix.) While we were there we saw they carried the Bisquick Gluten Free mix so I decided to buy some. For some reason Matthew has been obsessed with the Bisquick and has asked me multiple times to use it, but I just hadn’t gotten around to it. So this morning, when Larry got up, he suggested GFCF pancakes using the Bisquick Gluten Free. I grabbed the box and decided what the heck, why not?

Now, before you start questioning me about it let me get this out. I don’t believe Bisquick GF is organic (not sure, but it doesn’t say anything on the box about being organic) and I have no idea what two of the leavening agents are, sodium aluminum phosphate and monocalcium phosphate. Of course the word aluminum freaks me out a bit because aluminum is a toxin and we do try to avoid it, but I don’t know what sodium aluminum phosphate is, nor do I know what monocalcium phosphate is either. But with that is mind and the fact that I don’t know if they use GMO in Bisquick GF I have to say, it made some fine tasting pancakes! These are some of the best GF pancakes I have ever made. I simply added an egg, a cup of rice milk and 2 Tbs of oil to one cup of Bisquick GF mix, making it also casein free. I also added some GFCF vanilla to the batter just because I like it in my pancake mix.

The batter itself is a little thinner than regular wheat pancake batter, but it cooks up almost exactly the same and the pancakes have the same wonderful texture as wheat pancakes! I think that is what impressed me the most; the texture is fabulous. It is nice and pleasantly spongy. I could even make smiley face pancakes with the batter! The pancakes tasted so good that we ate them with just GFCF “butter”, there was no need for syrup.

I would love to see Bisquick embrace an organic position because that would make it easy for me to feel completely guilt free when serving my family these lovely pancakes. I guess all I need to do now is look up the two leavening agents and see how I feel about them!
